Nudo wine region in Montenegro
The Nudo region is both the smallest wine-growing area in Montenegro and the smallest recognized wine region in Europe. It is located in the valley of the Zaslapnica River, within the cadastral municipality of Nudo in the Nikšić administrative area. The region is geographically separated from other Montenegrin viticulture zones, which makes it a unique enclave of traditional vine cultivation.
To the southwest, Nudo borders Bosnia and Herzegovina, while within Montenegro, it encompasses areas suitable for vine growing in the settlements of Nudo and Vučija. Despite its modest size, the region holds cultural and agricultural significance as a viticultural oasis with authentic grape varieties and centuries of winemaking tradition.
Nudo sub-regions – Viticulture oases
Within the Nudo wine region, there are four narrow viticulture areas, often referred to as wine-growing oases:
- Kunska
- Žugljaj
- Nudo (center) – the largest oasis within the region
- Nudo South
These micro-zones provide varied but favorable conditions for grape cultivation, despite the small overall size of the region.
